Capoeira was born of an oppressed people's struggle for freedom. Inclusion is at the very core of capoeira, since it originated among socially excluded groups. Throughout its history, capoeira has always been associated with people excluded from the mainstream, yet who never ceased their struggle to affirm their identity, rights and cultural values. For this reason, capoeira has enormous potential for inclusion. Men and women of all origins, ages, faiths, incomes, and cultural levels are brought together by the capoeira roda. To the beat of the berimbau, they are all citizens of the world striving to improve their quality of life and bring about social justice.

Grupo Joglo

(translation still needs to be fixed)

As a group, Grupo Joglo can't be seen as a real capoeira group. However this group didn't have any reference nor relation with any capoeira group in Brazil. It is more precise to view Grupo Joglo as a group of people who had been dedicate their time, energy and mind learning capoeira autodidactly from many different sources. Simply, this group is a capoeira fan and study group.

The name Grupo Joglo doesn't related directly to any element or philosophy of capoeira. Word “grupo” had been taken from Portuguese language which means group and word “joglo” refers to a style of traditional Javanese house. The idea of using word “joglo” came from the training place which is located in front of rumah panggung Nitiprayan (a traditional wooden house where painters, dancers, and other artists both local and international gather) . The word “joglo” can also be translated symbolically as a place for training, a place to gather, and a place to build sense of brotherhood/sisterhood.

Grupo Joglo established on 1 October 2004 in Nitiprayan village Yogyakarta. It began when Burhan, a capoeira habitué playing around with some simple acrobatic tricks on an abandoned rice field. The group born to facilitates some teenagers who were enthusiastic to learn capoeira. In about two weeks after the group started, the members recorded up to 35 persons and half of them were kids aged 7 to 12 years old. The presence of Grupo Joglo can't be separated from 2 things: first, support from members of a local band called Kornchong Chaos. They were the first who suggest Burhan to make a regular training beside their rented house. Second, Burhan had ever been training capoeira for 8 month in 2001 untill the middle of 2002 in a first capoeira club in Yogyakarta (probably in Indonesia as well), “Capoeira Jogja Club”.

Training materials in Grupo Joglo were mostly taken from downloaded videos from Internet and the rests came from video game (Tekken), some short encounters with a few capoeira practitioners from abroad, and from workshops hosted by a well established capoeira group which was Capoeira Jogja Club, “Grupo Brincadeira” (now Grupo Senzala Indonesia). As a group which is active in learning capoeira, Grupo Joglo concentrated on learning the style of Grupo Cordão de Ouro.

On 31 May 2008, based on the same influence and future orientation, together with Fraternidade Capoeira das Ruas (Jakarta), Capoeira de Soerabaya (Surabaya), and Treimento Capoeira (Bogor), Grupo Joglo became Capoeira Vadiar Indonesia under supervision of contra-mestre Papa leguas (Cordão de Ouro). Capoeira Vadiar Indonesia is Hoped to become Grupo Cordão de Ouro Indonesian branch.
